In this comprehensive painting methods subject, students gain a thorough understanding of painting techniques and methods. Emphasis is placed on the nature of observation and the way it is utilised in painting. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary and historical approaches, students gain a theoretical understanding of painting and develop a critical awareness of individual skill and proficiency.

Subject Outline

This year-long subject is made up of three study units. Each unit runs for a 2.75-hour class session over a 12-week term. Units can be enrolled in any order or as a single unit of study if chosen. All three units complete the painting requirement for the CUA51120 Diploma of Visual Art and enable students to progress to the Advance Diploma.

Methods &
Techniques

Methods and techniques covered include handling of oil paints, use of opaque and transparent pigments, colour mixing and selection, and preparation of painting surfaces such as canvas. Students also explore various approaches to paint application including blending, glazing, scumbling, wet in wet, encaustic (wax), and impasto.

Key Dates

For Single Subjects there are no enrolment deadlines. Please be aware that subjects and courses at LCAD are popular and can fill quickly. To avoid disappointment it is recommended that enrolment is completed 4 weeks before classes start. Approximately one week before your class begins you will receive a welcome email including any material requirements.

Payment is due before the first class. If paying by instalment then the first payment before the first class is $400, the second one month later is $400, and the third of $400 is a month later again.

How do I enrol?

Go to the bottom of this current subject page and submit your details. The college will send you an enrolment form once received.

When should I enrol?

At any time. There are three entry dates per year: February, June, and September.

What date does my Enrolment need to be submitted?

Please enquire about availability if there is less than a month before the class starts. 

Do I need to present a folio to apply?

A folio is not required for single subject enrolment.

Do I need previous experience to study here?

Previous experience is not required for subject enrolment.

What do I need to enrol in an informal subject?

Just your enrolment form.

Do you have evening classes?

Yes, a limited range of subjects is available at times during the week, 6:00-8:45 pm.

Can I do a subject just for fun?

Yes, students can enrol informally in a subject for interest only. 

When are class fees due?

All students pay an initial deposit unless they are part-time (two subjects or more) and are using VET Student Loans. The balance, or the first term instalment, is due by the first week of classes.

What payment options/ methods do you accept?

EFT, credit card, and cash.

Can I qualify for a VET Student Loan?

To qualify for a study loan, students need to be enrolled full or part-time (two units or more per term). They will also need to have Australian citizenship, or be a special category New Zealand visa holder, or be a permanent humanitarian visa holder. An interview with examples is of previous experience is required.

How do I apply for the loan?

The college applies on behalf of the student.  Students will need a passport or birth certificate, tax file number, USI number, and a year 12 certificate or above. There are alternatives if the student does not have year 12 or cannot find their certificate.

How do VET Student Loans work?

The VET Student Loan is a commonwealth interest-free loan repaid to the government gradually. An additional 1% is added to their tax rate once the student is earning $46,620 per annum (2020-21) or above. The 1% tax rate gradually rises when their salary increases.

Will VET Student Loan cover all my tuition?

Some qualifications are covered in full and others are approximately 80% covered. The difference, or gap, is paid directly to the college by the student. Flexible payment arrangements are offered.

Will this also help me get into university?

Yes, Latrobe College has a long history of most of its graduating students successfully being offered their 1st preference university courses. Single-subject students can add enormously to their folio through subject study.

Enrolment & payment conditions

Completion of this form does not constitute enrolment. Payment must be made to secure your place in a short course/subject. Deposits can be made by credit card over the telephone and final payments can be made by credit card, by eftpos, EFT, or cash prior to the commencement of the first class. Final payment is confirmation of your enrolment. Receipts can be provided upon request. LCAD keeps a copy of any unclaimed receipts for 6 months and can be retrieved at any time. Upon enrolment the student has taken a class place and therefore must complete their payment for the Short Course, notwithstanding that the student may choose not to complete the program. If the student is unable to complete their program, credit may be given towards another program or suspension of study can be sought. If a student withdraws their enrolment 10 days or more before the first class, any payment less the deposit and bank charges will be refunded. Courses are subject to final student numbers. Class places are limited. Submission of enrolment form is taken as acceptance of the Enrolment Conditions.
